8N power loss?

I am looking at buying a 1948 (or so) 8N. The owner says that after 5-6 hours of mowing, it loses power and some oil pressure. Until then, it runs fine. It doesn't smoke at all, and loses no oil. At first I thought rings, but that should pose a problem all the time. Valves maybe, from not running leaded fuel? Any thoughts?

It could also be a overheating problem, I would make sure the radiator cooling fins are not collecting clippings and such..a good radiator flush would also be advised and refill with half water and half antifreeze..as Dell suggested the easiest method now is just slap a new coil in and go from there..

Electrical parts heat up and spark often gets weak. The coil is the main culpret, as suggested by Dell. Often a tractor will run fine then just die. Let her cool down and it's o.k. That's classic coil.

Aug..... ..Unleaded gas is not an issue with the N-Tractors low compression flathead engine. There have been many post to the board. Check the archives at the top of the page.

On a frontmount engine, loosing power over time is usually indicative of a ignition coil going bad. It is a time/heat related problem.

Only way to check rings and valves is a dry and then wet compression check, Ford specs 90 psi. More than 110, ya' got braggin' rights. More important is relative equal readings across all 4. ..... ....Dell
