Recently acquired 9N as gift from my dad. We've no history on these things as we've always farmed with larger stuff. What I know about it I've leaned from this forum...and thanks to all of you. So far, I have the usual complement of stuff for it (small bush hog, proper ORC, shaft guard, and BRAND NEW Zane Thang plus a small blade). It's equipped with a Sherman transmission which apparently has a 'normal', 'neutral', and 'overdrive' position. I say overdrive coz it goes faster and makes more gear racket than in the other position which I figure is straight ratio'd. My question is what would you use the overdrive for other than over the road transport? Seems way to high geared to do any work with(?) Is there more history on the Sherman to be found?

Thanks,

jon

Here is a link to a lot of info
on the Shermans. You might have
a high/ low (see the shift pattern
in the link)

If your sure you can't pull the handle outward while in neural to give you more gear selections, then you have a Sherman step up transmission. According to the orignial advertisements, you could do 181/4 mph at highway max. speed to get you from one job to another and for transporting "stuff". Amongst other praises, it also adertised that you could operate feed mills and other stationary equipment with lower engine RPM's, thus saving fuel and repair bills. It also said that in step-up 1st, 4mph, you could do light weeding, mowing, plowing etc. In step-up 2nd, 5mph, you could do harrowing, planting and cultivating. I'm not a farmer, so you can't prove all that by me !
