I have an 8N I'm trying to put back together after getting the block back from the machine shop. 1st problem, the crank does not have any timing marks on the gear. I guess I have only one choice, put the valves closed on #1 and install the crank shaft with the journal at the top position. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There is a slight chamfer on the side of the gear that is supposed to go against the crankshaft. If it is on backwards it might be impossible to see the mark. If you do try to get the gears set in time by putting the #1 cylinder on TDC and both valves closed you will have to be very careful to make sure the valve are right. After you have the gears in mesh the way you think it should be and with the #1 piston in the cylinder and torqued down turn the crankshaft in the direction of rotation or clockwise untill the piston is again at TDC and the intake valve is just beginning to open as the piston leaves TDC. Keep turning and when the piston starts up from the bottom of it's stroke the exhaust valve should begin to open and just as the piston reaches TDC again the exhaust valve should close. If the valves don't do this you don't have it in time and it will not run if you put it up any other way.

I would go find a new gear or an old gear with the mark on it and make one on the gear before I would put it back together. It's a long way back if you do it wrong.

Check both sides of the gear. Get another crank gear and match up where the marks are suppose to be.
