Sure wish I was a better mechanic! Here goes: 800 Ford....had been running very well.
1) One day it just doesn't start....nailed it down to the starter, pulled it, had it rebuilt. The guy who rebuilt it said it looked like it had been it a river or lake :)....well it had rained heavily a couple of nights before...and yes it was covered by a tarp.
2) Put on new starter...no go....jumped across the selonoid and it would hit....replaced the selonoid.
3) While at it ...thought I would replace the points and plugs....
4) Wouldn't start...insulating groumet in the distributor was bad...replaced groumet and a new copper connector....
5) Tractor starts...runs like Hello...see arching from the top of the coil to the side of the coil..
6) Replace spark plug wires....still runs like hello.....
7)Replace coil....runs better but under pull misses....thought it was bad gas...
8)drain the gas tank..... put in fresh premium....won't start....
9) check plugs...they have heavy carbon build up....replace plugs..... no start
10) no spark at plugs....spark at points....clean top of distributor shaft and put on a new rotor..
11) Tractor starts but is baddly out of time....
12) loosen distributor and try to adjust timeing....turn one way, it gets worse,,,,turn the other way...no better
13) put cover plate off distributor to check spings inside .....everything looks ok, though dirty and damp.....clean inside and air out....
Tractor still misses....
Should I consider a new distributor????? Or haul it to a mechanic :)?

Plug wires are 1243..... ..
The distributor "bite" me when I was turning it....which would indicate to me...that I'm grounding somewhere??? But if I knew, I wouldn't be asking yawl (that's Southern for you (plural)):)

I miss wired a 1963 2000. Thought it was 1,3,4,2. Started and ran but badly. Then figured out the wires. 1,2,4,3. Major improvement.

RT..... ..when you can see arcing anywhere in an ignition system, its time to replace that component (coil) which you did. You also replaced the ignition wires, which was a good thing too, they get old, dried out, cracked, leak 15,000 volts to ground. I'll bet you mis-wired your ignition wires. N-Tractors are so guttsey, they will start and run with the ignition mis-wired. Firing order is 1,2,4,3..... Dell

Speculative parts replacement is a hello way to troubleshoot a problem. $$$$$ Take the center lead of the coil and hold it 3/16" from the block and check your spark. You should have a nice blue spark. Do the midnight test on your tractor and notice if you are leaking high voltage.. Did you remove the distributor? If so, did you notice the position of the rotor and replace it in the same position?
Happy Motoring
