My local Ford/NH dealer claims the rear axle bearings/cone on my '48 8N are not pressed on.

I am replacing the axle, and the bearing on my old axle -- well, it sure feels pressed on.

Who's right?

Rob 8N,

The general rule of thumb for bearing fits is that the bearing is tight on/in the rotating member. If the shaft is spinning, then the bearing(cone) is tight on the shaft. If the housing is spinning, then the outer race (cup) is tight in the housing. In the application you are discussing the shaft is spinning.....therefore the bearing(cone) fit is a tight fit. Although it may not need a press to come apart/go back together.

Hey Rob: the picture below was scanned from the Ford Dealer Mechanic Training Manual. The corresponding text says to use the method shown or an arbor press to install the rear axle bearing. Shade tree mechanics like me can usually find a way around factory procedures, but this is "by the book." Print it out and take it by your dealer (grin).

Hope this helps..... ..... Ed

Ron, I had to replace an axle on my early 8N about a year ago and I had to get my FNH dealer to press on the new bearing.

I have the F0-4 manual. The meager three sentences in paragraph 133 on axle re-install say nothing about using a press.

The procedure for renewing the axle bearings on the 9N-2N refers to a press.

I just called my Ford/NH dealer again and explained my confusion. The parts folks there swear that for my model of 8N, a press is not involved for RE-install of the axle bearings. You made need a puller or something to get the bearings off, but there is no press involved for installation.

When I get the parts this evening, we'll see.....

One mechanic out here said he has put them on with a brass drift and hammer but says the press is easier.

One thing you might try is calling a different dealer and see what they say.

Good Luck,
Roger.
