After an acre of mowing with a 5' bush hog on my 8N (in the early evening) I noticed a red glow from down around the carburator. I let the tractor sit where it was overnight and took a look in the morning (no sign of fire damgage). What was glowing and is this common? Should anything on the engine be getting that hot!?

Phil, one possibility could be the timing being retarted. Thus firing a little late and a lot of the burn takes place in the manifold. This use to be a common problem. If you use a high octain fuel, This could add to the problem because it has a slower burn....Jay

Right about there is the clamp that joins the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. A leak there might blow enough hot gasses toward the air intake pipe to make it glow at night. I noticed that I have some soot on my air intake pipe from a leak from a clamp that worked itself loose.

Phil - I noticed that your question had been sitting here for quite a while with no answer, so I'll jump in. All I know is that I work my 8N's after dark quite a bit, and I have never noticed anything glowing like that.

The exhaust manifold and upper part of the tailpipe above the muffler get pretty hot, of course. Maybe if one of those parts has eroded or rusted out so it's very thin, it would glow red? That's all I can think of that might cause it.
