Axle bearings -- using a brass drift?

In the thread below, Roger mentioned putting on rear axle bearings with a brass drift and a hammer.

What's a brass drift? Is this like a punch?

1/2" dia. brass rod - similar to a punch.

I didn't have much luck with it. I did a practice run on a junk axle/bearing taking the bearing off. Yea it worked but you have to be REAL careful not to miss and bend part of the bearing. The mechanic claims it works a lot better going on because you have a better angle and more surface area to work with.

Personally I wouldn't recommend it as anything but a last resort.
