My 1947 2N will run for about a hour then dies. It will not restart until it cools down for about two or three hours. I have read other postings of people with the same problem. How can I be sure my coil has gone bad? Is there any way to test it?

Ronnie..... ..Yep, thats it. Bad coil.

It is a time/heat related problem. It takes some time for the coil to get heated up and melt the insulative tar inside the coil and when the insulation melts the coil turns short out and reduce the sparkies and it stops running.

It really takes some sophisticated electronic test equipment to test for this fault. It is not worth the dealers mechanics time or capital equipment investment to try to confirm this fault. NOT when they can sell you a new coil for $35 and blame the coil mfg for a bad new coil.

Unfortunately, frontmount coils are not as robust as we users would like to be.

Bite the bullet and replace the coil, don't muck around..... ...Dell

Look at two things, when it is running, take a plug wire and look at the spark lenght (jump) When it dies, look at the spark again, if the coil is bad, the spark will be very poor. Other method, find the dropping resistor, take a wire with 2 alligator clips and short across the resistor. The coil now gets full battery voltage and should start. This should be just a test, not recommended as a fix or long run time. I think the 2N is the same as the 1948 8N. David Bradley dealers carry parts for this tractor.
