Alternator charging delay?

I've noticed my ammeter sits @ 0 for 10 - 20 seconds after I start the engine and then moves. Do all alternators delay before charging the battery. If this is the case would someone mind explaining why?

Does anyone know of a place to get schematics for a alternator. I'm assuming they are pretty simple and I'm showing my,,,, ingorance on the subject. however, I've read some posts where they talked about exciter circuits etc and that's new to me. I'm the curious type and would like to better understand what they are talking about.

Thanks,

Roger.

Genessee has the rundown on the Single wire Delco Alternator including Specs and Wiring diagram. They are a sponsor of this board and their link is below.

The alternator does not start charging until about 800-1000 engine rpms. If you start the tractor, and keep the rpms low, you won't see the charge.

Jim, Don, Claus,

Thanks for the feedback. Schematics made sense and I'll bet it is the RPM's being low that's my issue. I'll find out tonight.

If this is a 12v conversion, it's usually caused by the alternator not spinning as fast as it does in a car.

Does it come on before you advance the throttle?

Mine usually needs at least 1/4 throttle before it will start. If it's really cold it will sometimes take more time and throttle.

Altinators start charging almost immediately. Some one wire altinators may not start charging until the rpm gets up to a point. See the link for a schematic of a Delco Si Series Altinator. I do not know why yours takes that long.
