Have just completed the major restoration on the NAA I bought last spring. I thought I might get away with not having to ask one single question this time. But, no such luck. Before tearing into the NAA, the tranny shifted OK, but there was no clutch adjustment left, and there was more freeplay than pedal. When I tore into it, I also found water mixed with the oil in the tranny. I replaced the clutch and the throw out bearing. I put it all back together and I could not adjust the clutch, and shift the transmission into gear without gear chatter. So, I tore it apart again, and replaced the pressure plate. It is all back together now. The clutch is adjusted properly, but if I shift into gear and let out the clutch, the engine dies. If I put the transmission in neutral and release the clutch, it will go forward in what appears to be first gear. The tractor will drive normally in neutral, but not move when shift lever is placed into gear. It also goes into gear hard, and is difficult to get out of gear once in gear. I figure I will have to tear it apart again, but I don't have a clue as to what I did wrong, or what to even check. Anybody else had this problem, or know what I did wrong?

I am not an NAA Expert, but it seems that your tranny is in 1st all the time regardless of shifter placement. That is why when you are in neutral it is actually in 1st. When you shift into another gear, 2 gears are actually actuated and therefore the engine stalls when you let out the clutch. This has nothing to do with clutch installation or adjustment. Just a coincidence that your tranny decided to take a dump. You need to take off the shift cover and find out why the 1st gear is not releasing when shifted into neutral.
Happy Motoring
