Owner was not available today, I will go over Tuesday morn and try to start, verify what is aluminum and what is not, check the number again very carefully, and if all is in order, close on the spot. Will post results later. Thanks for checking on me.

Ken: you are probably more on top of this than me about 9N's but here are some items that would be interesting to find out:

check the dash for a casting number just above the steering wheel.

check for the double ribbed fenders.

tranny cover may have a dip stick in it or not, but it also should be aluminum.

look at front spindles and see if the grease fittings are facing forward and not on the backside of the spindles.

also see if the steering wheel is a 4 spoker like Tyler just posted recently.

smooth rear hubs? or riveted? good luck keep us posted. good find. 9n'er

Summary of PSEUDO-low serial number 9N.
I have wiped the egg off my face, and here are the results:
a) 9N'er I am learning about the N-series even as I type. You and the forum has aided me no end.
b) Actual serial number "star"9N3I44I"star", I forget what the star actually means, something about cylinder sleeves
c)Magnet detected NO aluminum on dash, grill or cover plates
d) six blade fan e) starter button on top of xmission case
f) original key on left side of steering column shield
g) no tool box
small push/pull switch on lower left dash for lights (they don't work)
h) approx 2 3/4" steering wheel play i) Auxiliary shifter lever on left side, shows large, round, chrome or stainless knob and has three clicks, forward, middle and rearward, not tested yet. Appears to be j) oil pressure showed 40 PSI
k) Found something I own he will take in trade;
hence I can get for about 1100-1300 cash, plus the article.
later

Ken: 9N 31441 is a good tractor but it is much different than 314; but feel no shame. For me, and like you, it IS new and virgin territory learning about these 9n's. Nothing wrong about what you're learning. Wipe the egg off, and put a smile on cuz I don't think there is any egg deserved.

My 9N is 31649 and possibly came out in the same week as yours!

Mine did have aluminum inspection plates. So yours were probaly replaced (mine was cracked I replaced it with a steel one, but saved it). Price is "about right" maybe on the slightly low side...so that's good. Sounds like a step-up transmission. If it works, I say you did well.

6 Blade fan should be original.

Starter button on top of tranny appears to be right, as that was an improvement for 1940 9N's...to put the saftey switch on the cover to ensure tractor was in neutral before starting.

Oil pressure is ok at 40 cold. Don't be surprised if it goes down to 10-12 when hot. Not great, but not bad. Mine does the same...it runs fine.

I have the same dash as 31441. Key on upper column, light switch on upper left. Small dash light for igntion light lower left side about central location.

This tractor, more than likely, came out with an aluminum front grille.

* means cast sleeves. I'm curious about the front axle grease fittings. Mine has one facing rear and one facing forward.

Well Ken, we have sister tractors born during the same week. Fun. good work. still a darn good tractor...and worth any amount of effort you want to put into it. -9N'er (check out my 1940 9N in the Tractor Photo Gallery on the left sidebar...show the wife that that's what yours' originally looked like when it came off the assembly line).

Going back this afternoon to close the deal and make arrangements to get it home. Step up aux xmission does work.
I will discuss color scheme and grille after I get back, I am taking my digital camera, with fresh batteries this time. Will update you and have some BEFORE early in the cycle.
