Hi guys: I recently have had problems with my 49 8N missing. I put in a voltage reducer and reset my points after sanding them down a little. I recently converted to 12 volts and it ran good for about 4 hours and gradually started missing worse and worse. After resenting and cleaning the points it ran good until I started discing and then it started missing again. What could be wrong? Could my points be burned so bad that they need changing? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Ronald

I think the days of filing down points are long past. Taking a file or sandpaper to a set of points only grinds the tough plating right off the points surface and they burn up again in short order (maybe even within 4 hours).

About the only thing you can do to points now is burnish them. I've had good luck with a clean (as in CLEAN) white vellum business card. Run that sucker back and forth between closed points until the card comes out clean. Keep turning the card to a clean spot while burnishing.

If the points tear up the card surface with only a couple of passes, it might be time to replace that condensor along with the points. A sharp tip forms on either the ground side or the coil side of the points if the condensor capacity is too large or small (ie. going bad). A pronounced tip, replace the condensor and the points.

I guess that you know you have to have two resistors to reduce the voltage enough to prevent too much current going to the coil and points etc????? ?

Ah yes. Good point. 6 volt coil on 12 volts-2resistors. 12 volt coil on 12 volts-resistor optional, but saves points.

Forgot that very important point.

I agree with Claus that it is probably down to points. Are you using aftermarket points or Ford/New Holland/Case or whoever now has the parts concession? There have been posts of inferior quality aftermarket points-particularly the alignment and rubbing block material. I have a 9N converted to 12 volts with a 12 volt coil and have a Chrysler ballast resistor in the circuit. Have never had a problem. I also removed the pusher fan (heaven forbid, but what the heck, it's already 12 volts) and put in a puller, which I think cools the coil better. Like I said I have never had a problem but.....

being a tinkerer at heart, I just installed a Vellman electronic ignition (well kind of) kit from Radio Shack. It utilizes the points to fire a transistor circuit which fires the coil. No condensor, and no high current to the points. You do need to run two wires out of the distributor which is really not a problem. A plus is that if the module conks out you can disconnect it externally and wire in the condensor externally and be back in business in a number of minutes.

Now....I just finished it. The tractor runs, my son has used it to move a brush pile, but have no real operating time on it. Plan on bush hogging the four acres in another week or two, so at least I will have a couple of hours on it.

Will post anything that I discover.

Jerry U: Thanks for the advice. My 8n is a 49 model and has the distributor in front. I have heard there is no electronic ignition that would fit it but I have also heard of a fellow who has figured out a way to put one on the front with a lot of re-engineering. Have you heard of this? I was hoping to put one on the old gal if ever I had the chance and it sure would change the way I felt about her at times if you know what I mean. Thanks again, Ronald

And there is good reason for your points to keep burning. Vey few people know how to properly burnish points. You should not use a file or sandpaper because it will leave rough surface and then burn. Another reason is that you must maintain paralellism of the two point surfaces. This in itself is a feat. The reason is that if the points are not completely paralell, the contact surface is reduced. This increases the contact resistance which in turn produces more heat. The same goes for rough surfaces. In other words replace the points and make sure that the new points are completely paralell. The vented points seem to hold up a little longer.
