I have a 9N that is just about finished being rebuilt, but there is a problem. The previous owner welded the steering arms to the spindle shafts. My question is, "will 8N spindles and arms fit on a 9N?"
It looks like they will, but, I don't want to take it all apart only to find that there is a fit problem. Any info you can provide is appreciated. Thanks

No, outside of the woodruff key, they are diffent lenghts albeit only .250 thousands. They may fit, but you would need steering arms as well otherwise you would loose the benefit of the key as well. That is why they changed the design on the 8N so
They would not have to be welded as a fix.

Claus:

Maybe you have some thoughts on this: I have a 9N with those taper pin lock setup. At times welding does seem attractive, however, the consequences as are evident above are disasterious.

I was wondering if one could carefully drill and tap a hole between the spindle and the arm and thread in an allen screw to hold the whole thing much like a "taperlock" bushing in a sheave.

You would have the effect of a key and a lock to keep the arm from moving, yet still be removable. Any thoughts on this or am I plowing up the wrong field??

I would think that the allen srews are too soft to accomplish what you are looking for. Additonally, if I understand you correctly, the manner in which the screw would be inserted would leave a half round screw that would easily wear quickly. On the surface your idea sounds good. I agree that welding is to radical a fix...
Just my opinion.

I have a 9N which someone did drill and place a bolt in between the arm and the spindle. Guess what, it is as loose as a goose. I was thinking about putting a small slice in the inside of the arm where the original bolt tightens. Any ideas on this?

I have a 47 2n that had one 8n arm and one 9n arm. When I started to rebuild it and put new tie rod ends on, I found that the tie rod end would hit the top of the radius arm bolt on the 8n arm side. I found that it is slightly "flatter" than the 9n arm. I replaced the 8n arm and had no problem.

Rick, I called Central Tractor and got their free catalog a few years ago and if I have a question like this, I look in there and see if they have the same part number. If they do, they are the same. You can probably do the same thing with online numbers. Simple, huh? L8R----Fred OH
