Thanks Zane for the help! Hydraulics are fixed. I'll still be taking you up on the jig,I haven't got them adjusted completely.

For those of you new to 8n tractors, as I am, here's my symtoms and fix.
My lift would only work with the control lever in the upper 1 inch of the quadrant. And only like their suppose to when I first start the tractor and when I point the nose down on an incline and lower the implement all the way down. Otherwise when I was working it would only raise up about 6-12 inches and no more. Even then, very slowly.
My first research took me to the manual and then to this list. The main solutions listed were a faulty check valve or a leak in the piston. But these solutions were mainly to fixed symtoms such as lifts not holding up implements or not raising lift at all. I first replaced the oil then opened the inspection plate, with the tractor running I did the Zane thing and checked the check valve and piston for leaks. A little but not much. While I was in there I moved the control arm by hand. Wow! my lift jumped up like it just came out of the assembly line. I had heard about a cam follower pin but could not find any info about it at all. I did a search on the archive but to no avail. I kept checking the current posts to this list and ran across a post last month from Zane where he mentioned that the biggest culpret to bad hydraulics was the cam follower pin. But that was it. I finally emailed Zane personally and got the info I needed. I'm fortunate in that an old guy near by is a retired tractor man and has just about all the parts you'd need. I picked up two pins 1.50 each and a check valve $20 and a gasket $3.00. I pulled the cover off and sure enough the cam follower pin was worn in half. Replaced it and went ahead and replaced the check valve, put everything back together and Wow! what a difference.

Hope this helps someone else.

Rob

Glad to be of help. You are welcome.

Not everybody can follow instructions like you did. You just got to have a little of the mechanic in the genes I think.

Good luck.
Zane
