Replace the upper thrust bearing. Stay away from the cheap teflon ones and get the steel barrel bearing about $13.00..While you are at it inspect the lower one too.... When you reassemble, you do not want more than .010 play in the vertical shaft movement. This is controlled with shims between the base and the shaft tube assembly...
Happy Motoring

Get the I&T manual from FNH or one of the vendors advertising on this site. Chances are that the upper bearing has failed on the steering shaft and that can be easily and inexpensively replaced. It's typical of an upper bearing failure if the tractor will only steer one way or if the wheel and shaft seem to worm their way out of the shaft housing.

It sounds like this is your problem and is likely due to loss of lubrication. It's not a difficult task to fix and relatively inexpensive as long as the "ball nut" is still good.

Good luck with yours.

Niels

My steering froze up on my 8n. The mechanic said the seal - on the steering wheel shaft had let in rain through the years. Rusted the whole thing and it would only turn to the right.

A new gear box, gears etc and $800 poored and I was steering again.

Paul..... ..get the I&T FO-4 repair manual $20 cheep. Good pictures, deacent instructions for newbees. Neat thing about these ol' N-Tractors, repair parts are relatively eazy to get and pay for. Check the "archives" at the top of the N-Board. Lots of references to steering problems. I'm over 50 yrs old and sometimes I don't steer to good eather (grin)..... ..Dell

An I&T manual well do fine for N series others? Joke (IT) stand for it may tell,it may not.

But anyway sounds like you may have some bad bearings in the gearbox or possible shattered sector gears?

Good luck
