I was driving around and saw a pile of gray metal in the weeds in a guys side yard. I stopped and it was a hood totally shot,a frontmount engine no head frozen, rear casting including hyd pump and flip over seat, appeared to be complete drum to drum with totaly shot fenders. Would a hundred be to good an offer on the pile?

$100. OK. It's worth more to the owner of the same model tractor. You didn't say if it was a 9N or early 8N. If I saw it, and it was like mine, I would get it just for parts. Recently, I looked at a 52 8N that had good sheet metal, but the engine and hydraulics were in bad shape. You never know, you might mix and match one up cheap, as long as the engine is rebuildable, it's worth something. Don't ever send an N to the scrap yard. bg will have to repent for saying that. :)

This is not a whole tractor just rearend casting with guts the engine without head and the rusted out hood. I own 8N294728 and thought that the distributer the block and the hydraulic pump might have some value to me at least as cores From the looks of the guys place the pile doesn't bother him to much if it sat there forever. Oh well nothing ventured nothing gained,

What condition are the wheels in(rears=$50-100 ea, front=$25-40)? Transmission? Steering box? Radius arms($30), drag links, oil pan. Obviously a parts tractor. A good rebuildable block, transmission case, rear end, lift components are in demand. Too bad the sheet metal is gone. Figure how much work you want to do,and make the guy an offer. He may let you have it to haul it off. Scrap metal is going for around .12/lb around here.

$.12/# ?!?!? Can I send mine down there? :-)
I just called and was quoted $2.65/100#
for CI (or $.0265/#) and just $.01/# for all other steel. Not worth carrying to
the recyclers. Mine just went into the
landfill! :-(

Sorry, that was a typo. It is .02/lb.

No problem on typo, I just had to check.

Several months ago I had a rented trailer that I used to bring a 3000 rear end home so I could get the differential lock out of it. When I went to take the trailer back I figured I could haul a cut up old car to the scrap yard at the same time. When I got there he would not even take it for FREE! Said that the metal had to be clean, no rubber, etc. and even CI needed to be "clean" to get the top price. Luckily there was a car junk yard that would take it so I didn't have to drive to the land fill some 25mi. away.

With CI at $.02/# a whole N (@2400#) would be worth $48.00 IF it were all CI!!! The castings are worth MUCH more than that!! That makes junking any N almost a crime! :-)

Pitch should offer the man the $100 and tell him that is twice the junk value. (my $.02)
Hope he does get, it least that will save most of an N. It might even be worth fixing it back up if there are enough good parts in what is there. Remember a good working N will bring around $3K in most areas.

As to what is missing, engine heads are readily available for around $160. Sheet metal, even if it is that poor fitting foreign stuff can be had which would make at least a "working" tractor out of what is there. The tranny and rear end castings are a few of the things that cannot be easily obtained so having those makes a refurbishing it possible. Of course, I hate to throw anything away, so temper my comments with that knowledge. It's not in VA, is it? Hope not, I'd be tempted..... :-)
