Haunted 8n gives up its secret

Past postings have noted the erratic quiting problems of my 8n. Got good advice and tried replacing igition switch, coil, points & condensor, resodered wires, checked voltage, replaced gas tank (rust in sediment bowl) etc.

After 5 hours of smooth running I shut it down next to my neighborhood mechanic tonight. It finally wouldn't start next to a battery of test equipment.

The guy who asked about weither or not I had a dust cover on my distributor turned out to be the closest to the truth. Weak & erratic spark caused by grass chaff & dust inside the distributor. Filed points, blew out distributor -which didn't look all that dirty and got a great spark. I'll carry the point file with me and try to find a dust cover for the distributor.

Thanks to all the folks for advice.

My distributor cap has a groove around the mating surface that a thin cork seal goes in. Works great once I put it in. It was in the tune up kit i got and I never knew previously that a seal went in there. I also coated it with silicone and the coil seal also. Should have no moisture or dust problems now.

Just some thoughts after the fact: Why is this thing getting excessive dust and chaff in it in the first place? As the crankshaft moves up and down, it pushes and pulls air mostly through the crankcase breather or anywhere else it can. And if the distributor shaft wears the bushings and creates clearance, theres another place to push and pull air. If the intake manifold or the air cleaner has the slightest restrictions, would'nt it even try to pull air up past the piston rings? I saw one recently that had about a pound of steel wool inserted into the air cleaner to help clean the air. I advised against this as it could break loose and find its way into the engine. Also it would be a restriction. Anyway, these are just some thoughts... L8R----Fred

The inside top of the distributor cap was pretty greasy. Thot it was carbon but I suppose it could be blowing a little oil by worn bearings?

The inside of the distributor isn't loaded with junk, just dusty and some chaff. I'll check out the aircleaner again.

Uh...that would be me, thank you very much. Thanks for keeping us informed. If anyone knows about dust and weed chaff around an 8N, it would also be me...right, Tyler?

Thanks for the lead but why not before the $375 at the dealer for a non fix, $211 for the gas tank, new coil and misc. parts. (:>)

O.k. so where do I find a dust cover? I don't see one on any of the businesses that advertise parts with this page. I suppose some tape arround the joint where the cover meets the distributor might be an interium solution?

Thot it was heat, then the bumpy field as didn't have the problem with snowplowing or grading the driveway. No grass, no chaff. Gads.

The 8N is not really supposed to have a dust cover. It was an NAA feature. Mine has one and I like it. Our 2000 had one also. It's part # 12239 with a bunch of little seals and parts that go with it.(12267, 12268, 12114.) New Holland has them, for sure. Don't forget the little clip that goes on top of the shaft, under the rotor button.

O.k. How can I forget the little thing on the top of the rotor. I have only handled it about 75 times in the last few months. (:>)

The New Holland dust cover apparently fits this diameter distributor. I will check it out.

Still can't imagine how a little dust can shut this thing down? It was clear that no juice was getting through the points (although to the points) and cleaning, filing, did the trick.

I had the same problem with my 8N when plowing , I also had a 801 Ford at the time and it had a dust cover, thought ah, I will just use that one. WRONG, same size distributor but not the same, would not work. I ended making out an old inner tube a cover that I sewed and glued together . It definately helps but does not keep all dust out. Just got to remember when it dies , clean take cover off and blow it out.
