I have a side mount 8n and know that tractor pretty well. I recently volunteered to work on a friends 8n front mount.I first want to do a tuneup ie points , plugs etc .I have read the IT FO-4 Manual and it states that to replace points, condensor or do any adjustment on the distributor you must remove the distributor from the tractor and then proceed . I was wondering from those of you who have experience with a front mount if this is in fact true and if so do I have to remove the hood in order to remove the distributor....Any shortcuts or tips would as always be greatly appreciated...Thanks...Alan

Alan,

I've had good luck with this procedure:
1.) Flip the bail off the coil--no need to disconnect the wire.
2.) Lay the coil up on top of the fan belt.
3.) Unsnap the retainer clips that hold on the distributor cap--again, no need to remove the wires.
4.) Lay the cap up and out of the way near the fan belt.
5.) Remove the two bolts holding on the distributor TAKING NOTE OF THE ROTOR POSITION BEFORE REMOVING!
6.) Remove the distributor.

I'm notoriously lazy, and don't like to remove any more wires than necessary. I've had no problem working around them and the fan belt without disturbing either.

Good Luck!

Ron

Just one addition to what everyone else said, a cautionary story: I thought I was being very careful when I first reinstalled my front mount after my first 8N tune-up. I started to snug the two hex bolts and SNAP...broke the distributor housing! Getting a replacement from my local New Holland dealer I was surprised that they actually *stock* several of them. The parts guy tells me they sell lots--most people break them the first time they reinstall the front mount.

So be very careful when you put it back in...the book says it only fits one way, but the fact is it *almost* fits the wrong way too, but not quite. Once you've done it right, it is obvious but the first time it isn't.

good luck & have fun,
Tom

Tom. You are right about the dist almost fiting when it's not right. I found as you must have that the center tang is offset so it does go back one way. You can't put it on 180 out, or it will brake as you know. I was thinking of how I could change the points on my front mount, when I decided to check the archives on the topic. Found out it was easy to remove and reinstall. I didn't have to do what Steve claims to have done. I'll admit thinking of doing the same. I check the points first with any bit of trouble. They seem to move once in a while. Dale in VA.

Remove coil wire, pull the plug wires, remove two 1/2 hex bolts, 1 on each side, remove coil and dist. from left side of tractor. Note the position of the offset tang that drives the dist. when you remove it. Piece of cake. Reverse to reinstall. In the dark years before I got a FO-4 manual, I would change point with the dist on the tractor. I had special screw drivers bent just the right way and a mirror so I could see. Lifes much better with a little education. HTH

Alan, it would be extremely difficult to rebuild the distributor without removal. Follow the instructions. I suggest loosening the fan belt and get it out of the way, or as I do remove the generator and you can get the dist. in and out with ease! Just had to open and dry the points on my 2N grass mowing machine as we had 6" of much needed rain and the poor old girl was soaked. I almost removed the dist. just for that as it is hard to assemble the cap, coil and especially locate the cork gasket correctly with the distributor in place.
