I have had my 8n 204728 for about two months and I don't know whether I have a problem or not. The ampmeter always runs about -10 and with the lights on it drops about two more amps. The previous owner told me not to run the lights for to long because it will kill the battery. I have cleaned all the connections from the generator to the ampmeter with no change in the reading. I have run the tractor probably 20 hrs. since I have had it and notice no change in the cranking power of the new battry,Do I have a charging problem?

You definitely have a charging problem. The question is whether it is the generator, regulator, or wiring. Since the ammeter goes from -10 to -12 amps when the lights are activated, the ammeter is probably ok.

Take the generator to an auto-electric shop and have them test it. If the generator passes, check the wiring between the generator and battery, keyswitch and regulator. If the wiring looks fine, replace the regulator (hard to test these guys).

Obviously you have a problem. When you say that when you put the lights on it goes to -12?
If you mean that when the lights go on it drops two amps as in goes to 8, you have the ammeter leads reversed or in the case of the old inductive ammeter, the lead is going in the wrong direction. But in any case it should not be 10 anything all the time, even if it where not charging the ignition only draws about 2 amps. 10 amps is what I would expect with the lights. First I suspect you have a problem with your ammeter. Replace it. They are not too expensive.. about $10.00 Since you are not experiencing any degradation of the battery I suspect your charging system is working ok....
