I noticed (as I'm sure many of you did) that a Sherman over-under unit recently sold on e-Bay for $806.05. What's your opinion/experience regarding value added to N's when they are bought/sold with a good, working over-under unit already in place? Is the asking/selling price typically anywhere near $806.05 more than tractors with standard transmissions?

read your quality farm & country cat. on page 75 used ford parts under 8n transmission ia a "complete over & under drive trans attachment" for only $449.99. buy two sell one on e bay and your's is almost free. price for this information is a power steering setup for my massey.(ha, ha) i'll take it if you want to send it though. good luck and remember, any old tractor is a good tractor, and they can't all be masseys.

my 8N has the over/under sherman trans. i would not take $1000 for the sherman. i use it to much to do without it.

I would think buying a Sherman under would be useful, but then, that's only the beginning; I would then justify the price of a new tiller and they ain't cheap.

Rossow..... .I find most buyers and sellers on e-Bay have no real grasp of value. But thats the value of auctions, prices determined by willing buyers. If ya' gottahavits, then thats the price you're willing to pay, not its true value.

BTW, I've saved a lot of money at auctions by being 2nd highest bidder (grin)..... .Dell

A friend of mine is buying an 841 with a Sherman high-low and he is giving 2300 for the whole deal. Tractor runs good, converted to 12 volt, sheet metal is fair but fixable. I told him if he doesn't buy it, I will. I told him I would take the Sherman out and put it in my GJ and then sell the 841 for 2300! And this tractor is located at a dealer. Dealer told my friend that Shermans weren't worth much in his opinion! I would rather have the Sherman Shuttle shift tho.

This is apples to oranges. The Ns are underpowered and overgeared. The Sherman O-D-U gets you a slower first gear and 40% more "power". The 841 has ALOT more power and a slower first gear. The Sherman O-D-U in a 841 is a nice feature, but not nearly as useful as it would be in an N. (And the transmissions won't interchange...the 172 engine has a 1" 15 spline output).

I sell using tractors and can't get any more for one with a Sherman vs. without. I split the tractors and rob out the O-D-U to sell to guys on this board. I have a list waiting to pay $650 and it's my opinion that it is a good investment for the N owner.

I have added a Sherman over/under transmission to my 8N. It cost approximately $1000.00.
I have found the extra high and low range extremely beneficial. I believe it gives the tractor almost unlimited versatility. As far as I'm concerned my 8N is worth $1000.00 more than it otherwise would be.

If you were going shopping for a 8N this
weekend, would you pay $1000 more for a 8N
with the hi/ lo sherman than one without?
(assuming similar condition of the two tractors)

Would you pay a premium for one with a hi only?

Since I only use my N to cut grass, I would not pay the difference. As far as I am concerned a high only would be totally useless for anyone. The fourth gear on the N is mainly for travelling. Most Ns have front end trouble and could not even utilize 4th at full speed without shaking all over the place. A high would make things that much worse and in my opinion would make it dangerous.

Now that I have a Sherman and know how useful and versatile it is I would be prepared to pay more for an N with one. I know people always say "let the other guy pay for the swimming pool, I will hope to get the pool for next to nothing as I won't pay extra for the house because I really don't want the pool(but I will use it if it is there!!!!! )"
I would certainly bargain for the N with the Sherman but I would expect, and be willing, to pay more as a result of the fact that the transmission is installed.
I believe you need the over/under Sherman. The lower speed, and power, from the low gears make it safe to bush hog for an amateur like me. I like the extra "top end" from the high range when I am using the highway.
All in all, the Sherman has been a very welcome addition to my N and I wouldn't part with either the transmission or the tractor.
