Do I need to find a Sherman transmission

I just pick up a 9N and I want to use it to bushhogg around the house. Several of my friends say that the 9N doesn't have enough horsepower or correct gear ratios to pull a five or six foot bushhogg. Some say I need to find a Sherman auxilliary transmission. I also heard that they made several different ones, some overdrive, some underdrive, and some with both, high and low. Another friend said the high/low models only fit a 8N, not the 9N. I hope you guys can help me out. I'm not sure what to do, which one I need if any, or do I need one at all. Thanks

Greetings.
I concur with the others, you don't actually need one, but they can be helpful. The gears on the 9 N are different than the 8 N, so a sherman from a 8 N won't work on a 9 N, and vice versa. The ORC that BG mentions can save your hide and also lots of other things (like your car, or garage door) if properly installed.
Good luck, JOHN :>)

I have a 2-n 1944 model with a 5 ft hogg and it does nicely in medium hight grass. If you get into deeper grass shift down to low. High gear might cut goat-weed but it may be a bumby ride and not to safe either. Shermans are nice if you can find them they run about 5-600.00 bucks. On resale you might get 200.00 bucks back for all you trouble. sincerly homeboy

They made Step-up and step-down and combo Shermans for 9N, 2N, and 8N. They even made a reversing unit so you could turn the machine around and make a forklift out of it.

DO you need one for bush-hogging with a 9N? No.

While a 3-speed tranny isn't ideal, the 9N has enough power to use a 5' bush-hog. 6'may be questionable.

What you will need is a Zane-Thang position control or limiter chains to set the height, and an over-running coupler so the bush-hog won't use its flywheel moment-energy to propel the tractor forward, even while the clutch is depressed.

Also, the non-live PTO will stop when the clutch is depressed, so it becomes annoying and difficult to deal with heavy grass or when you wrap up the mower in fence wire or vines. In such a case. to raise the mower, you then have to unhook the PTO shaft, engage the PTO/pump control and raise the mower.

An ORC will cost you about $60 and you can get one that adapts the 9N 1-1/8" PTO shaft to the standard 1-3/8". Or you can swap out the PTO shaft for around $100 and use a standard 1-3/8" x 1-3/8" ORC.
