What is so hard about making an electronic conversion kit for the front mount distributor on an 8N? I really want to utilize it, but without a side mounted distributor, there is nothing available.

I was visiting Mr & Mrs llamas this summer and Johan showed me a prototype front mount electronic ignition he has perfected (his usual Rolex solution). He mentioned marketing it, but I don't know the status of that venture. Might be worth an e-mail to ask. Johan.Bakker@unisys.com

Although not a true electronic ignition, Vellman makes a kit that uses the points to fire the coil. It is available through Radio Shack on the internet for $18 and is adaptable to front coil systems that have been converted to 12 volts.

The only advantage that I see is that you probably will never have to change points. While I never particularly had problems with the ignition on my 9N, I put one on. It works well, but I really can't tell the difference after using it a few hours of bush hogging.

I tend to believe that if all is maintained well, the stock ignition should work well. 12 volts tends to make it more forgiving than the 6 volts. Beyond that, I think you are in for a lot of work to make the front mount electronic, which I think would far exceed the benefits.

IMHO

Ross..... ..everything.....

Square ignition coil.....getting timing sensor mounted inside the distributor.....getting reqd 12 volts into distributor to run the module..... Take your distributor off (2 bolts) and look around.

The square ignition coil is charitably described best as "adequate". Yeah, you can "hog-out" the gutts and cobble an external ignition coil to feed through the shell. Or figger out sumpthin else.

And on top of everything, ya gotta convert to 12 volts to run an electronic ignition system. Check the "archives" at the top of this N-Board for discussions and problems of the electrically challanged.

If you really wanna an gotta, then ya gotta solve all the problems yerself. ..... ..Dell

Thank you

John
We don't offer bolt-in kit, but can provide parts for the brave few that have adapted standard components to fit the 9N. (Some machining required)

Andy

thanks
how much does it cost and do you provide instrudctons or am I on my own

We provide basic instructions. Also there is an article in the Summer issue of the N-Newsletter on just such a conversion. Give us a call at 918-274-8000 for more details...I can talk much faster than I can type.

Andy
