The rear main bearing seal on our 9N appears to be leaking. We've had it apart but can't seem to get it to stop. The part is listed as 6335 in the 1943 Service Manual and is depicted on page 24. It appears to be made of aluminum with no gasket. Is there supposed to be one? Someone has battered one end of the piece - would this cause it to leak? Should it be replaced? Is there some sort of sealant that can be added?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

A.

The rear main bearing seal is a rope seal which comprises 2 halves, top and bottom. The bottom one fits in the pan. The top one fits in an aluminum or pot metal rear seal retainer ring, sort of a half moon object, which in turn fits in the block. The block to retainer ring fit is snug, but regardless, it should be permatexed well or it will leak. If it's banged up, it's probably twisted or out-of -round, which means more chance for leaks. I'd order a new one. They are available from various sources. Attention to detail here as well as the packing will cure your leaks.
