I have equipped my 8N with an 8 volt battery and now my ammeter reads continuously 0to-10. The generator seems to put out 8volts according to my meter. What goes.

Thanks, Al

8 volt battery, big mistake. I just did the same thing and only after a lot of trial and error fiqured it out. First of all, to charge the battery you need 9.5 volts. The voltage regulator only allows 7.5 volts to the battery. You are always taking juice out of the battery, but never charging. I went back to the 6 volt battery and to overcome slow starting I rebuilt my starter motor which was requiring excess voltage. Runs just fine now after much frustration.

I have had an 8v for about a year now. It stays up better, and I jump it With 12V if I leave the 8N neglected too long. That said, I generator today after new wiring and regulator. I polarized it and got 8.19 while running at the battery.

The generator was full of rust and the brushes were gummy.

Anybody out there got expeiences with getting a 6V 2 brush rebuilt?

8.19 is of course not enough to charge the 8V battery and letting any lead acid battery sit for any time at all in a discharged or partially discharged state spells short life for the battery. As others have stated, you must have about 2.35 volts per cell to properly charge a lead acid battery. Since an 8v battery has 4 cells, that means about 9.4 volts. The voltage regulator you use MUST match the battery voltage. You cannot use a stock 6V regulator with an 8V battery or you will destroy the battery in short order since it will never charge. If voltage regulator has an adjustment then set it for about 9.2-9.6 with the engine at higher RPM and battery fully charged. Lights will not last long in an 8V system. I prefer to tell folks to stay at 6v even though my company does make 8V voltage regulators. They are only for the 2N and 9N systems equipped with adjustable 3rd brush type generators.

AN 8V BATTERY SHOULD HAVE THE GEN SET TO CHARGE AT ABOUT 9.4V OR MORE. ADJUST THE REGULATOR OR WHATEVER TO READ ABOUT 9.4 TO 9.8 VOLTS. RIGHT NOW YOU ARE JUST MEASURING THE BAT VOLTAGE AND IT IS DISCHARGING. GOOD LUCK
