Is it missing?

Just first tractor, an 8N with side mount. Replaced the coil, plugs, plug wires, key switch, distributor cap and fluids. I could not find timing marks on fly wheel so felt for compression in #1 plug and rotor was in the position to fire #1 plug. In other words, I guessed. When tractor is idleing, I hear soft popping noises at the tailpipe like it is missing every so often. Do they all sound like this or is there a problem and it is missing or a stuck valve.

To see if it is missing, pull each spark plug wire one at a time and then replace. If there is no difference when you pull one of the wires, that cylinder is not firing/working.

If this is the case, it could be any number of things: bad plug, bad plug gap (MUST be .0025), bad wire, bad dist. cap, bad rings, bad valves, ... You will need to do a compression test (both dry and wet) to further narrow it down.

My tractor has a similar "putt" problem. I also think that it doesn't have the power it should, though I have nothing to compare it to.

In my case, I'm thinking my tractor needs a ring job as I have one plug that is oil fouled pretty quickly after cleaning/replacement and I've also got the following for wet/dry compression readings:

Cyl .#4 .#3 #2 #1
----- ----- -----
Dry 102 101 91 114
Wet 110 105 99 119

So I'm figuring I'm in for a ring job once winter comes and I can screw up enough courage.

So you might want to re-inspect your plugs and do a wet/dry compression check. Also verify good spark for each plug.

But I'm just a rookie too. Maybe the one of the veterans will chime in and tell you to simply adjust the thingamus out until the framus doesn't fribble any more and you'll be set for life!
