12 Volt Conversion Question??

I have a 800 Series Ford Tractor...which I've owned for several years. It has a 12volt battery, generator, 12 volt coil...points, etc. Recently, I was told that the 800 series were originally 6 volt? If so, I'm assuming that all they did was change to a 12 volt battery, change the ground, and swap a 12volt coil for the 6 volt coil....Is this correct? Or did they have to swap the generator from a 6 volt to a 12 volt, also??
How do you tell a 12 volt generator from a 6 volt generator?

All N,s NAA's and the Hundred series left the factory with with 6volt positive ground systems. The first deviation from this pattern was the 01 series Diesel that was 12v in 1958. All 8N's came with "A" wired 6v system that was only capable of putting out 6v. At some date Ford produced a "B" wired generator that was capable of producing 6v or 12v with simply changing of the voltage regulator and battery and coil as you had mentioned. I am still searching for information on this but it was about the time of the NAA or Hundred series even though they were 6v units. I have two 8N generators that were also "B" wired and have no clue as to where they originated from and there is no telling it from the outside, or for that matter the inside by anyone but a pro. One of my 8N's was 12v when I got it simply by using a 12v regulator and battery as the tractor you mentioned but the regulator must compatable with the generator, it was also a Ford part that is no longer available. If I were you I would abide by the old saying that "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

12 volt generators are internally different than 6 volt generators. You can not make a 6 volt generator charge a 12 volt battery even with a 12 volt regulator. It takes university level electronics courses to understand why.

There are some 12 volt conversions that used a Ford diesel 12 volt generator because it looked "stock" and inexpensive 12 volt alternators with built in regulators were not as readily available as they are today. BTW, alternators are smaller and more efficent than generators.

To tell a 12 volt generator, you'll have to find a part number and get it cross-referenced by a good auto electrical shop..... .Dell

It is difficult to tell a 6 volt generator from a 12 volt generator. Normally, the 6 volt generator will have heavier windings on the field coil and the armature. The actual voltage is controlled by the voltage regulator. Happy Motoring
