Coil Question

Just checked the voltage from the coil to the points, trying to fix an engine miss... I put the volt meter on the wire connecting the point to the coil. Voltage did not change form 6.15 whether points were open or closed. Also, ammeter is not charging. The battery is real low. This tractor had a 8 volt battery when I bought it. I immediately replaced to a new 6 volt. Could the 8 volt battery ruined the coil. Tractor starts good but has a little miss more noticeable at id

Make sure that your point ground wire is in good condition, and that the point ground terminal connection is clean bare metal If you have an "open circuit" at your point ground screw you will have exactly the reading that you describe. Perhaps you have a connection that is just at the borderline of good / bad and when the tractor engine is cranking the vibration and the rapid point open and closing is just enough movement to overcome the bad point ground connection. At any rate the above condition would certainly cause at least some engine miss. Is this problem just developing, or is it steadily getting worse?

If the engine runs, then this cannot be. You cannot have the points closed and still measure 6.15 volts at the wire that goes from the coil to the points. I do not think that your little miss is due to the coil. Pull the plugs and see if you are getting good combustion on all the cylinders.

I agree. Regardless of whether you have a resister in the circuit, which you should have !, you shouldn't get the same reading regardless of whether the points are open or closed. I suspect that that 8v. has fried the points a little, especially if there is no resister in the circuit. After you do what Claus said, change the points. My $.02.
