I don't think you should ever have an N head milled unless you can see some definate place where it has been burned across between two cylinders. If the head is warped so that it is higher in the middle than the ends that is not anything to be concerned with. With all those bolts you could make a rainbow lay flat when it is torqued down. Always be sure to remove every bit of the old gasket and any other foreign material and oil from the head and the deck. I know for a fact that I have had at least a hundred heads off N tractors over the years and I have never had one milled and I have never had one blow a head gasket after I put it on. One thing that we had back 40 years ago though was a very good all copper head gasket of about 4 or five layers that you could actually use over is you were in a tight. Done it many times and never had one leak.
I always use a coat of copper coat spray sealant on the head and the block. This will keep it from seeping water and compression.
If it is leaking around the threads of the bolts you can add a container of Bar's leak and that will be stoped in a few minutes of running and it won't harm the cooling system. You can also remove the leaking bolt and coat it with silicone glue and put it back in and that will stop it from leaking too.

When torquing a head and you don't know the recommended sequence you should torque it the first time to about half the recommended torque value usint what ever sequence you want to. Go back over it again at about 10 pounds more the next time. Do this till you have it torqued to the recommended value and then go over it one more time at the recommended torque and it will be right no matter what the sequence that is recommended.

Had the same problem with an aftermarket head gasket. Went to a FNH head gasket and problem went away. Had something to do with the metal rings around the holes--was several years ago so I don't remember the particulars--but the FNH gasket didn't leak. Didn't use any puckey on it either.

Torque it to 65# cold or as the specs in the manual say. Then fire her up, let her run, and then re-torque at 65# hot. Follow the I&T direction for proper sequence for bolt tightening around the head. If ya don't have an I&T, perhaps someone here can post a picture from that page here for ya.

ANother thing: and some say it's good and some are ambivelent; but consider taking the head to a machine shop/engine shop etc and check for warp. If it has a warp, consider paying 30.00 and have em' plane .0012 or so from the head to ensure a flat head.

I'll tellya though, I have had a difficult time reaching the bolts to tighten them with a hot engine. I am trying to find one of those original Ford wrenches to help me reach the ones that are difficult to tighten once I have had the hood, gas tank and plugs installed. post your results if this works or doesn't...good luck. 9N'er

I lucked into the wrench that I use for a whack of the stuff on my 8N.

third party image

It is a Craftsman closed-end, 12 point. It has slight bends/offsets at each end. It is appx. 10 3/4 inches long and has both 11/16 and 13/16 so it fits the head bolts and the plugs (and a whole whack of the rest of the tractor from the radiuas rod adjusters to the nuts on the trumpets).

I have no idea about actual price as I got it at a garage sale in a box of tools for $5.00.

Someday, I'll have to amble down to Vt and tell the wife I have to borrow a wrench from Salmoneye. At least it would be a good excuse to meet.

A guy can never have enough "whack of the stuff" wrenches or tools. I'll go to Sears today and ask for a "whack of the stuff wrench" and see if I get booted out of the store again. thanks for posting. :)

I am still expecting to meet you next year (and a bunch of other regulars) when you host 'N-Stock'. I figure a 2 day trip on Bonnie 8N. She is far more reliable than either of our Jeeps :-)

Funny thing about wives. She thinks I should work on the Jeeps more...

I have found it easier & quicker to get ahold of an olod wrench & a torch & make my own wrench. The torch alows you to bend & twist the wrench to whatever shape you want. Then when it cools down & your done you can just throw it in the tool box & have it whenever you need it. Got into this habit working on JD's & needed a special tool & Jd wanted an arm & a leg for thier stuff. Good luck.
