I bought what was proposed as a ford 8n but after reading the serial number am beginning to think i was taken. The number as far as I can tell is as follows---9N*IA7267* Is this a 9n or an 8n???
stupid question as it may seem if it starts with 9n is it a 9n???

Rick
There's something wrong with the serial number. Ford used the letter I for a numeral 1 and the numeral 6 looks like the letter b but I've never heard of an A being used to replace a numeral. Could that A really be a 4 by any chance??? At any rate the engine probably is some place between a 1943 and a 1946 2N engine but as mentioned in one of the earlier posts it could be an 8N with a 2N engine installed. Check the tranny to be sure. FWIW

Sure do appreciate the responses. This is a great page with very knowlegable friendly people. printed up the identifiable link. Will look for more numbers to arrive at a closer manufacture date. it sounds like a hybrid tractor. Never the less it is a great running tractor and I do enjoy it, just wanted a handle on what I had. Funny how you acquire knowledge after you buy it. Kind of like getting old, if I knew then what I know now. once again thks to the responders and happy safe tractoring.

Rick..... .N-Tractor engines are interchangeable and of course the s/n goes with the engine. Quick check: ONLY the 8N has a 4-speed tranny. ONLY 9N & 2N have a 3-speed tranny. ALL 2N engines s/n start with 9N. You might want to check the "archives" at the top of this very excellent N-Board..... .Dell
