I have a 2N with a generator with one lead and a cutout relay. It will not generate unless I touch a jumper betwen the generator terminal and bat lead. charges fine then until I shut it off and then next time the same thing. Wired with Pos ground. Thank you

Try using the jumper between the gen output and the cutout output. It may be that the residual magnetism needs to be restored in the iron of the field shoes in the generator. The iron molecules have to be all turned facing in one direction and this is determined by the grounding wheather it is positive or negative. Over time the polarization may become partiall eroded and need to be re-established by jumping across the cutout.

(DOESEN'T THAT SOUND LIKE I KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT ELECTRICITY?):>)

Also you may want to try taking the top of the cutout and bending the limiting tab down so that the contacts are closer together. Be sure to have the battery disconnected when doing this.

If all else fails go buy a new cutout!

Looks like the cutout relay is not pulling in. This could be because the generator is not putting out the required voltage to pull in the cutout. due to the hysteresis of the cutout relay, once energized, it will keep it pulled in. You need a volmeter to troubleshoot this problem. The cutout relay should pull in around 6 volts. It takes reverse current to open it. Happy Motoring
