I am contemplating the purchase of an 8N which has an aftermarket front end loader with a self contained shaft driven hydraulic pump. My question is will the 8N with loader handle 700 to 800 pound round bales, or is this tractor loader to light to handle them safely. I moe about 60 bales a year for my stock.
Thanks in advance

My Jubilee will lift 500 # 4 X 4 bales, but I can hear the relief valve complaining if the spear isn't all the way in the bale. I bought an Oliver 1600 that will lift 6 X 6 bales without any problems - the bigger tractor just feels alot more stable doing it.

If the 8N is what you want to use, or is the most economical at this time, then maybe you can spend another $100.00, and cut the bale in half for easier transport.

I have no experiance with this thing, but like the idea.

why don't you forget the front end loader and just get a bale spear for your rear hydraulics?

I use the 8N to stack and then retrieve bales that are stacked three high.===== =Tuff to do with the 3pt hydraulics, but a piece of cake with the loader.
IMHO

I have a stinger or spearpoint installed on my front loader bucket which I use to move small round (approx 400#) bales for my horses with no problems. Obviously I am lifting the bucket as well as the bale. I feed roughly 100 bales or 20 tons a year that way. For a while I was feeding 1200-1500# bales but just used the 8N for rolling or dragging the bales short distances. That wont work if you don't have your hay right where you're feeding it. If you can get a source of 400# bales you would be in business. You might even get away with 500-600# bales because I have no counter weights at all and my rearwheels don't seem light with the 400 pounders, but I'd want to try it out first. FWIW

I agree with Dell. If you want to lift round bails you need a bigger tractor than an 8N. If it were me I would want an 800 series tractor.

LazyHorse..... .most N-Owners, if their honest, would admit that N-Tractors are not the greatest frontend loader tractors, but if thats all ya gotts...

Really, the front axle is kinda weak for that kind of load 800#. Then you'd need a counterbalancing weight on your 3-point to keep the rearend on the ground. As great and neat as I think the N-Tractor is, I'd suggest keep looking. I'm glad you asked first..... .Dell

I agree with Dell. However: if you have the loader on the front end, you have extra weight as a counterbalance for the existing 3 point hitch. I am able to move apple bins of about the same weight and maybe a litte more, using a fork attachment that hooks up to the 3 point hitch, and using the existing hydraulics, but I do have wheel weights on the front, and it does just barely work. I have seen bale spears for sale for moderate prices, but as has been said, this would probably be the maximum for an N tractor.

I've not moved any hvy round bales with my 8N but have other things like heavy rocks, etc...over not so smooth ground. Made a little bead of sweat break out on my brow...:-) not to mention alittle wheel lift...:-) I think the 8N is too light for that much weight.
