The two long screws that go through the starter are actually what holds the starter to the casting.

Just a couple of things:
1. Take off the oil filter before hand, otherwise the starter will not come off; take off the WHOLE starter unit at once; DO NOT take off the outer part and then have to swear at the innards trying to get the brushes backed off so the shaft will fit back into the outer part;
2.) you can replace the gear that is spinning on the starter for a lot cheaper than you can replace the entire unit. Probably it will be lots easier if you get a manual for this before you pull it off - good luck, JOHN :>)

Salmoneye-Remember that it could be the ring gear slipping!

If the starter checks out to be OK, then look at the ring gear on the fly wheel to make sure that it is not loose and spinning.
Could be the starter is OK, but the ring gear just spins, not turning the engine...
