I have not been reading this board for very long but have gotten to really appreciate it. Thanks to all the faithful guys that answer the questions. I have one question though. What is this Zane Thang? Am I to dense to not have been able to pick up on it?

The Zane Thang also works great for 8N's when the hydraulics are "leaky." Brushhogging with my 8 was a literal pain in the neck before I put the Zane Thang on it. The arms would not necessarily leak down; but they were either too high, and I was cutting the grass at about 24 inches tall, or they were too low and I was scalping my pasture closer than a golf green. I constantly had to manually adjust the lift. It was a royal pain in the kiester (and neck!).

The Zane Thang made the lift not so touchy and I am now able to brush hog without making any adjustments. Definitely worth the money! If you have any questions on how it would help your 8N, just email Zane. He is a wealth of information and was very patient answering my numerous questions. Another bonus - even I put the Thang on with no problems and a minimum amount of time!

Sounds like what you need is stabilizer arms - I use those also. Problems with leaky or faulty hydraulics - contact Zane and he can help!

Okay, as I understand it, this Zane Thang is to maintain the up/down position of the implement. What I need on my 8N is a means of keeping the 3 point arms from swinging side to side when using a rear blade. I don't have a rear bush hog but I suspect you need one there also. What's available to fix the side to side problem?/

Hi Ray: Here's a picture of what Jim.UT is talking about:
third party image

They really do help stop the side to side sway of your back blade, bush hog, etc. One potential "gotcha" here, though easily fixed, is that you may need to replace the hitch pins on your implements if they are not long enough to accommodate the lift arm AND the stabilizer bars.

Hope this helps..... ..... Ed

Ray, since you have an 8N (rather than a 2N or 9N) you don't need a Zane Thang. The 8N came from the factory with position control. Position control is what was lacking on the earlier Ns and Zane has solved that deficiency with the "Thang". Now, as for your problem: you need stabilizer bars. They are two pieces of flat stock that attach to brackets under the axles, just below the fenders. The other end of the flat stock attaches to the three point pins on the implement. Sometimes just one bar is enough to stop the side to side sway, but I always attach both. Available from most any tractor supply store.

Roger,
The Zane Thang is for 9N's and 2N's only, which did not have position control, only draft control which is fine for plowing. When the 8N came out, (amazingly coincidental that it was in '48) position control was incorporated. Check out Zane's site.

I asked the same thing and finally just had to get it because of all the testimonials. If I really described it you could build it yourself, but then that would cheat Zane of well deserved credit for his invention, and I can't do that. Let us just say that if you ever brushhog and always have problems returning it to the same level once you raise the implement, then get the Zane Rhang and worry no move. I bolted mine on in about 10 minutes and it is so simple it's scarry. Just get it for consistant implement level control.
