9n Whine

Bought a rough 9n last spring and have worked all summer getting it into running condition. Even broke it apart to replace the starter ring, pilot bearing, and to check the Sherman. The problem is that it has a 'whine' that seems to come from the transmission on back through the rear end. The whine is only noticeable when in third gear. A mechanic friend said to stay out of third gear. I don't plan on breaking it down to find the cause, but I am really curious as to the source. If the Sherman is engaged, it's really noisy. There are no clunks, or grinding noises, just a 'whine'. Fluid levels are OK. Is this typical of a 1941 9n? I have had 4 8n's and none of them sounded like this.

Yep, I had "the whine" and it went from a minor annoyance to an ear plug situation in a couple of years. When I rebuilt the engine last year I tore the tranny apart and had a machine shop press in new bearings. You can do it yourself but it was my first rebuild and I wanted to make sure it was done right. What a difference! Now I can hear that strong engine and the swoosh of the bush hog throwing rocks...

A stethescope is a very good tool for determining the source of the BAD BEARING. sorry, bu that is where a whine will come from. I'd always thought that it was straight cut gears, but when mine finally turned to a clunk, it turned out to be a bearing in the main transmission shaft.

The good news is this is easy to fix....you take off the engine (you know how to do that) and then unbolt the tranny from the rear end (yuou do have to remoe the PTO lever/cover first).

I am not sure how a sherman comes out, but on mine, the bearing carriers come righ off, and then you can install new tapered roller bearings and seats. I only needed them on the main shaft.

You adjust the end play with shims under the bearing carriers. I had too many, and so the shaft had too much end play. You'll see when you get it apart.

What a difference. Now it's silent (well... compared to before). While you are in there, prepare to deal with 60 years of sludge buildup. My wife has banned the N from the garage after that job!

Take Care
Steve
