my 9n has the original 6v system and has just recently started burning through points quickly.
What might cause this?

There are two things I can think of that will cause points to burn quickly.
1> They are misaligned (something gets bent when you install them)
2> Oil on the points. Clean your feeler gague with solvent before setting points. Check the inside of dist housing for excess oil. Don't overlube distributor cam.(Just a light film)

P.S. There is no resistor in series on a 6v 9n coil.

If your resistor has been bypassed and the points are getting 6+ volts they will burn quickly. A running tractor should have less than 4 volts at the coil.
