After letting a buddy borrow my 8N, it was running super bad, and quit after I got it back home. I ended up rebulding the starter, distributer, carburator, and governor. It starts and runs now. However, the slighest increase in the throttle causes the engine to race. My assumption is I did something wrong when I rebuilt the governor. Can anyone help with the following questions?

1. When I took the original governor out the gear was attached to shaft with no movement. I drove the gear from the shaft. There was no set screw, pin, etc to hold the gear in place. I assumed the orignal shaft was bent. The gear now spins freely on the new governor shaft.

A. Should it spin freely? B. If not, what should be done to keep the gear from spinning freely on the governor shaft? C. Were there different shaft diameters manufactured?

2. The various manuals I have mention that there should be .23 to .28 gap, and is not absolutely clear between what (clip & washer). There is about a 1/2 inch play between the base washer and clip. There is one shim.

A. Should it be this way? B. If not, what part am I missing?

3. The carburator lever only moves half the distance that the throttle lever moves. In addition, the throttle lever moves half the distance to the original stop setting.

Is is possible to put the fork on the lever shaft on backwards? I thought I layed it on the floor the way I took it out.

Go to the Archives at the top of the discussion board, There was someone who posted the complete rebuild process to the governor along with color pictures of each step. This should help with your questions. The Article was within the last few months.

I found the posting in the Archives, it was by Don8NAZ on 25 Aug 2000. Good instructions and color photos. He did an excellent job. Also has one for the Carb.
Hope this helps;

I think I found the problem. The Governor Rebuild Kit I got had a new Ball Drive Shaft, which is a tad smaller in diameter than the original. As a result the drive gear spins freely on the shaft.

I'm lucky the drive gear did not spin off through the outer housing. Hopefully I can find the old shaft.

I think my other questions will have solutions once I resolve this one.

Thanks. I appreciate your time and help.

If you can't find the old shaft, you should be able to jb weld it together.
