I have a 9n and 8n with front mount distributors.
When purchased, both had broken ears on the bottom of the distributor cap. A friend said that this is common for a front mount distributor, because the axle will pivot up and hit the distributor cap, breaking off a piece where the plug wire connects. Is this truly normal, or do you have to really bind the axle in order to get it to strike the distributor cap? Thanks.

Rick: Same problem here. The King pin didn't seem to be worn but, someone had this old 8-N apart before, and didn't put the shims behind the axle. There was about 3/8" space. Added shims hope this will solve the problem...My 2 cents.

This is one of my winter projects between snowstorms. Worn King Pin and bushing.
If any one wants to see the broken #2 post on the cap, just drop by. We can have an adult beverage or two and look at it and go, 'Yup...Worn King Pin and bushing'...

Good thing that RTV and duct tape are holding it together for now. I really want to try the 'Dell', 'Sparkies In The Dark' thing...Hmmm...Maybe after another Molson...

Most likely the ears were broken while the distributor was being installed. The drive tab on the distributor is slightly offset so the timing can't be 180 degrees off. Unfortunately, if it is 180 off on installation, it may appear to go into place, but will break the ears off when you tighten the nuts.

No, it can't be a "normal" condition because my 2n does'nt do that and I've had it over some pretty rough terrain. But then again, I replaced the axle pivot pin and bushing. That's what usually causes that distributor interference, a loose or worn front axle pin and bushing. I can't say that with a tight axle, it will never happen, but not to me so far. My $.02.
