If you have it out don't forget to add a zirc fitting and fill the new box with grease instead of oil after cleaning it out well. I just rebuilt my box, and added two fittings for grease and it works great. I rebuilt it because the upper bearing was toast from lack of lubrication and I had the newer style box with no way to add oil. Good luck.

I have to disagree mildly with Rick. I too just changed an old one for a new one. You need the new arms that go with the new box, and that necessitates getting a new dash as well because the clearance down at the bottom of the dash is different.

I have also just changed my box out, and yes you do need to change the arms but I was able to use the original dash. It is bowed out about 1/4" at the bottom, but this causes no problem. I was able to run it down the road in 4th gear and the sherman in high for the first time. The gear ratio in the later box is better than the early ones and steers much easier.

Yes that's right. You can force the old style dash. The other option is to cut some metal away or grind it off I suppose.

I just changed one for a gentleman, he had the old style and I got a used "adjustable" one and installed it on his 48 8N. It fit great. I need nothing else to do to it.
