Finished the rebuild on the '54 NAA. Everything looks great, except I am unable to get the front crankshaft oil seal to quit leaking. This NAA has the original 2-piece cover. I replaced both housing gaskets, and the governor shaft seal. All appears to be tight and sealed, but I get a small oil drip from the crank seal, about a teaspoon full a day. The original seal I removed was steel, with a rubber insert. N/H furnished me with a new seal which was plastic with a rubber insert. The old seal I had to beat it out with a socket. The new seal could be pressed into place by hand. Fearing that it may fail, I used a "perma-tex" product to seal the outside diameter to the governor housing. Upon removing the governor housing and inspecting it, the outside diameter appears solid and not leaking. I am convinced it is the rubber seal where it touches the crankshaft. Anyone else had this problem? Is there a better seal on the market? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I think that the tractor place sold you a piece of junk. It should be against the law to sell such useless junk to the public.

There are many manufactuers who make a good seal. Never put in something plastic if something steel came out originally. (Now you know)

Any automobile parts place such as NAPA can sell you a good name brand front seal for the NAA.

My son is next week supposed to receive his PH d in polymer science from the University of Southern Mississippi. I hope he doesn't try to re invent the wheel! :>) Buy more plastic come to think of it!
