hello, i purchased this somewhat worn tractor for a temporary replacement for my massey fergusson as i overhaul it. but someone put an 8 volt batt. in it. and as soon as i ran it a bit, it quit charging. there is also an "extra" on/off switch placed in the system. i was told to switch it on when i started it, and then turn it off. has ANYONE seen or heard of such a thing before? and why? also, the thing seems to be an 8N but the serial # is above what the book says they made. my source has a 4***** # as the last one made. and this is 8N503032#. what gives? is this thing real or is my imagination going south? thanx for any and all help. al

Is it possible that your 6V voltage
regulator was bypassed with a switch so that the battery would charge the 8V battery?

i suppose that is what was done, i just started to get into it when i sent the question, and don't have a lot of time to tinker. thought it would be quicker for me to ask on-line to see where to look first. thanx to all for the input. al

FOR SOME REASON PEOPLE BELEIVE THAT A 6 VOLT SYSTEM WILL NOT START A TRACTOR. 6 VOLTS IS PLENTY TO START THAT TRACTOR. THE SWITCH WAS TO CHANGE THE VOLTAGE SO YOU DIDN'T OVERCAHRGE THE BATTERY. REPLACE BATTERY IF IT DOESN'T CHECK OUT AND CHECK CHARGING VOLTAGE TO BATTERY. PUT VOLTMETER AT BATTERY TO SEE WHAT IS COMING BACK AT THIS TIME AND IT SHOULD READ FROM 6.5 TO 7.3. MAKE SURE BATTERY CABLES ARE HEAVY DUTY AND NOT THE CHEAP ONES YOU BUY A LOCAL AUTO PARTS. THE HEAVIER SIZE THE BETTER.

1952 8N's were numbered from 442035 through 524076
It should have little diamonds stamped before and after the number
