My 8N has been missing and low power since I moved dirt with it for a few hours a few weeks ago. Worked fine then. Number 3 plug is oily wet. Compression dry is 100 on 1, 80 on 2, 90:3, 100:4. Wet 155:1, 140:2, 115:3, 185:4.

I'm guessing rings are weak in 2 & 3 and valves are weak in 3 especially.

I pulled the rear valve cover and those valves are opening/closing nicely. Saw a fair amount of tar in that area.

What do I do now? Not enough power to use, too good to burn it. I've never overhauled a tractor engine with sleeves. No experience except the '51 Chevy 6 Dad & I did in the early '60's. What's a price range for an engine overhaul in the midwest? I suppose I ought to do the clutch also while it is exposed??

You are going to be quoted some very reasonable engine rebuild prices on this Board. And maybe I got taken and / or could have got my parts cheaper, I don't know. I live in the Chicago area and none of the dependable machine shops around here are cheap. You really have to be careful here since a shop can literally tie you up for months until they "get" to your job. It cost me about $600 at the NH dealer (which is probably more $'s, but they are familiar with the N flatheads unlike the other shops in the area who are primarily auto engine rebuilders) just for the labor on the engine in the shop, and that included installation of new valves, de-grease, freeze plugs, fit pistons and heavy sleeves, check rods and rod bushings, and block re-surfacing. Problem that I had with my 50+ year old engine, was that the more I got into it, the more needed to be renewed, such as timing gear, clutch assembly, water pump, front pulley, oil pump, etc. etc..... I did the rest of the work myself. Total cost of my job was around $1800 including parts, and although I could have bought a rebuilt N for around $1200, I don't think they would have done everything I did for that price, and that rebuilt engine would not have included the accessories I renewed also like the generator. It depends on how much you want to do while you have it in pieces.

The dramatic rise with the wet test certainly points to rings. Also, maybe you have a head gasket leak between 2 and 3.
