Hello All:

I have a 46 2N and am going to change the points, rotor and condenser. I have never done this before but I do have the FO-4 manual. Is it as straight forward to do this and retime the engine as is described in the manual? Are there any tips or tricks that would help? I think the hard part may be getting the distributor shaft lined up and putting the distributor back in place. Is this correct? The distributor is front-mounted and there's not much room to get access to it. Thanks for any help or info you can provide.

I did it for the first time this past summer and it was easier than it looked. Identify the plug wires as to position and then remove them and the ignition wire. Remove the two 3/8 bolts that hold the distributor in place and wrestle it out (rotate the fan). Replace points, condenser, rotor etc. Don't worry about timing the engine the distributor only goes on one way. I put it back on by getting it into position and starting the two bolts but not enough to apply any clamping pressure. I then pulled the engine over using the fan blades until I felt the dizzy slide into place. Piece of cake.

I got the tuneup video and the steps to removing were take coil off and ballance it between the block and the fan belt. Push distributor cap clips to the side and move cap forward. Note which side rotor is pointing towards then pull off forward (note - last time I tried this I cut my thumb deep!). Next, remove the two bolts (one on each side) that hold on the distributor. Then slip distributor off - I understand that it has a key which will only allow it to go back on one way so don't worry too much. After that, you can do all the rebuilding on the bench.

Pulling and reinstalling a front mount distributor is no big deal. Two wrench one beer finagle. The tang that engages the cam shaft is offset so it will only go back one way--the right way--unless you force it. Put on a new set of wire plug wires as part of what you are doing. Plug wires break down and it has been a mystery to me why some folks change plugs every year and leave on fifty year old plug wires. It is also worth your time to solder on the crimp on wire ends.
