Called "NAPA" and they recommended an 8 volt battery, looked thru archives and nothing to sway one way or another. Is this a good idea? Seems to me that I would have to change the charging rate to keep that battery alive. TIA for you help. Paul

Have a 44 2N bought new, over 30 years ago changed to 8 volts, hade to change nothing, same coil came with tractor new. Had 1950 International truck, 6 volt, would not start, changed to 8 volt, no problem, have 41 9N that needs new battery, going to buy the 8 volt, the 6 volt batterys just do not give a hot enough spark even with everything else up to par.

I go with the majority vote. I've had an 8 volt battery and even had a charger that was 6,8, or 12 volt capable until I loaned it out and it came back fried (family). The 8 volt was a bandaid. That tractor is back to 6 volt and I am a die hard, avid, true believer that, if the system is up to snuff (electric and mechanical and fuel delivery) 6 volts will handle the job.
Additionally, our 8N in its early life worked some 16 to 18 hour days (11 or 12 at nite)and it has three lites. We never had a problem with it not charging enough to carry the load.

I have used an 8 volt battery for years in my Famall C with no problem and it solved the slow starting motor problem. I moved the field adjustment on my generator to the highest position and it keeps the battery charged just fine. Good luck with what ever you decide. I do think that 12 volt conversion is a big pain and that the post about making the whole system work better with clean connections etc. is good advice.

Dave..... ...while an 8 volt battery in your Farmall works for you, it really isn't recommended for the ballast resistored frontmount 6 volt coil N-applications. 'cuz 8 volts will lead to the early death of the barely adquate 6 volt ignition coil.

Yeah, 8 volts will spin yer 6 volt starter over faster and really doesn't harm the 6 volt starter as attested to the many 12 volt conversions using 6 volt starters. 8 volts at best are a band-aide specially since you can't get the Ford 3rd-brush generator to output 8 volts, ya go runnin' round with undercharged 8 volt battery ennyways.

Bottom line, the usage of 8 volt battery on 6 volt N-Tractors is NOT RECOMMENDED. To paraphrase the polititions: its the frontmount ignition coil stupid..... ....respectfully, Dell

Thanks for the information, I did not know that. I'm always glad to learn. I don't get much closer to Ford products than cruising through the board.

IMHO...

Stay away from the 8-volt.
Not only will it not charge well, but you are putting two extra volts to the coil and points that they will not like.

Make sure that all your connections are clean bright and tight (or something like that), make sure that you have copper core spark plug wire and make sure that you have the biggest battery cables that you can find. Do not use 12-volt cables from NAPA as they are too small to allow the amps that you will need for the starter. Fat and as short as possible.

1/0 are good...2/0 are better...bout the size of your finger...

Like twelve volt conversions eight volt batteries are a crutch that you shouldn't need if you get the charging system up to snuff. Although there may be some accessories that need twelve volts there is nothing that needs eight volts. Get yourself a six volt battery designed for tractor service and you should be fine.

Your mileage may vary
