I posted on wrong board- Thanks to Dell-this was brought to my attention. Dell, I gave my husband your answer to the problem of : broken timing gear, #1 piston TDC, fly wheel timing mark set @ zero, installed new timing gear with #1 TDC and mark on fly wheel @ zero. The crank shaft gear timing mark does not align itself with the cam timing gear mark. Cam shaft gear is apprx. at 2 o'clock. My husbands response was: so it means that the cams don't line up and then he just ignored me and said "sorry, but I'm trying to fix this. I e-mailed you and asked if your answer to me was for a side or front mount. I don't know why I'm trying to help the grouch, guess thats what love is!

Barbara..... .with this timing gear "miss-mark" problem that has just recently (last couple of years) showed up. You have to ignore the camshaft gear witness mark in respect to the crankshaft gear.

Set your camshaft so that BOTH #1 valves are seated (cross-check: both #4 valves are wide open) Turn crankshaft so #1 piston is TDC and then slide the camshaft gear into place with out moving eather units. You'll know when its right, 'cuz it'll be obvious. Then for the next poor guy that rebuilds that engine, drill a "correct" timing mark on the camshaft gear that'll line up with the crankshaft witness mark.

I know it flys against all engine rebuild practice. As I said the timing mark descrepancy is rather obvious if you're looking for it. Since most N-Engine rebuilds don't include replacing the camshaft gear, lot of rebuilders arn't having or noticing this problem, just the ones that replace the camshaft gear.

Good Luck, we care..... .Dell

Just wondering if we should be wary of certian mfg's of N timing gears.

Also would the supplier not know and demand the correctly marked gears from mfg.??

I had one not marked at all they seem to be taiwan with a name like that no wonder they dont know how to mark them but basically you should check your valve timing without reference to the marks it types out easier than it is but..... .RSP
