I bought a 1949 8n about a month ago,it has always started easily and run strong. We loaded it onto a trailer and hauled it to our farm. When we got there it wouldn't start! I had left the gas on for the hour and one half trip! Now, three weeks later I went back to the farm to mow and it still won't start...what could have happened during that trailer ride? What should I check? I am a rookie when it comes to working on tractors so I didn't know where to start. thank you

Steve,

I would change the plugs (I use Autolite 437) and then try to start. If it doesn't start, try a squirt of starting fluid in the carb. If it starts (or tries to), it is a fuel/carb problem. If it won't start on starting fluid, probably a spark problem.

Try this and post back if it doesn't start.

Danny

I've had the same problem with my '49 if I've forgotten and let the gas on. What's worked for me a few times, turn off the gas, disconnect the air cleaner line where it goes into the carb. I find that this usually has a lot of gas (dirty) in it. After I've cleaned this out I usually let it set overnight and then try to start it the next day. Hope this helps.

You also could have flooded the tractor real bad with the gas left on and that bouncy drive. If that's the case from what I have heard from some folks on this board is you just have to change the plugs, todays unleaded just shorts the plugs out once they are flooded that bad, and the only solution is to change them. I think that's what's wrong with my hybrid 9N with and 8N engine on it, also. I just can't seem get on over back to the US to get it taken care of.

I have a '49 too, and, since you left the gas turned on, the first thing I'd try is turning off the gas, draining the carburetor (into a can), putting the drain back in, turning ON the gas, and giving it a try. It seems best to get in the habit of turning the gas off each time you shut off the engine.

Steve..... ...The list of things that can prevent any vehicle from starting is universal, fuel, ignition, compression. Its the details that'll gettcha.

Since ya dinnna tell us what ya checked and since I flunked mind reading. I'ma gonna GUESS.

Since ya bounced the tractor down the road hauling it to yer place. Ya juss mighta stirred up all the crud at the bottom of the gas tank and clogged up enny of yer 3 gas filters. One inside the gas tank that you can't get to. One ontoppa the glass bowl. And the obscure filter inside the carb elbow.

Recommend you seriously consider getting an I&T FO-4 manual. Readily available at many sponsor of this great N-Board, most tractor parts emporiums, www.n-news.com. Even Ford/New Holland fer peets stakes. $29 cheep. Gettcha 1 and readitt..... ..Dell
