Need help from the sparky experts on figuring why the 12v battery goes dead after being idle for a couple of days. The generator is an old 3 brush 6v converted to 12v with an attached regulator. Shows 12-14 volts at the positive side (neg.grnd system) depending upon engine rpm. Anywhere from a neg. amp at idle to 20 amp at 3/4 throttle. Couldn't find any grounded wires in the system that might cause a slow drain. I've recharged the battery and am leaving it disconnected at the posts to see if it holds a charge (6months old). Anyone have an idea what I've overlooked.

I just fought this problem for over a year. My "short term" solution was to disconnect the battery every time I left the farm.

Final conclusive solution.....was a defective ignition switch. Even with it off and the key out, it was still "somehow" draining the battery. Since I replaced it.....no problems whatsoever....regardless of the overnight temperature.

you removed the battery terminal. if it stays up after a couple days, then i would say one of the contacts inside the voltage regulator is not opening when engnine is off, and draining to ground. might be due to slight mismatch pushing the generator to 12 volt., or just bad contact. sandpaper the contact if burnt, or adjust it slightly if it wont let go when engine off.

Al, You have a 6 volt generator converted to 12 volt? How was that done? Attached regulator? It sounds like some one cranked up the third brush to push out all it can. About 8 volts if you're lucky. If the attached regulator is round and has one lead out of it ,it is a cut out. Why was this done? If you have to have 12 volt do it right with a GM single wire alternator. Or put it back to 6 volts. Click on the link below for wireing diagrams.

Hi AL, I'm going to take a couple of guesses.
If the problem didn't exist with the old battery, I guess that the new battery (6 mo) has a bad cell.
If the problem existed with the old battery or if this is a new problem and the new battery was not bought to correct the problem, then I guess there is a closed circuit.
A new battery can have a bad cell when sold, but my money is on the circuit. Good luck.
