Stabil in the fuel tank...now or never? (at least for the rest of the winter)

Replaced my leaking 9N fuel valve and bowl assembly yesterday and I am wondering if I should consider unburying the 850 from underneath tarps and snow to put some Stabil in the full tank of gass for the rest of the winter...? What harm if any will or could happen if I let the 850 gas just stay in the tank without Stabil? It was topped off before I tarped it.

On another note: to Charles (MO) (on the lighter side...with all due respect), it was just another boring night up here in New England. Just wondering how you're doing down there in MO? I think someone here said something like "Super Bore?" Oh, oh, I did it now, here come the diatribes, expoundiations, and OT bablings and ramblings on pro sports from Ross, Randall, and company. :) You'all have a nice day. 9N'er

Hey 9'ner, had a friend of mine in the machine shop business that says he put the stuff(stabil) in a welder and it gave him fits. Says that the fuel jelled on him. This guy does some super resto's on Model T's(original) and has helped me out from time to time. Anyhoo, he didn't say how long it was in there and all the conditions surrounding the problem but every since he told me that I quit using it and just go a' la' nue.

I generally use Stabil over winter, but from my experience, it's a lot more useful in machines like snowblowers that sit over a summer. It appears that gasoline deteriorates much faster in hot weather than cold, and a lot of untreated gas still smells fresh in spring. A couple of months in hot weather makes gasoline smell like old linseed oil, though. At least that's what I've experienced.....

I turn off the valve and use all the gas out of the carb and have never had any problems , however don't do what I did and that was in my tractor in my yard (city lot) my Massey Harris had gas in it that had to be well over a year old, I decided to drain the gas and use in my truck, worst thing I could have done. In my tractor it still ran fine, in my truck it plugged up the filter and almost killed my fuel injected GM. I think the older carbs it doesn't make much difference. My opinion only.

Hey now, don't go and try to make it sound like I am a blood thirsty maniac. Although I love to hunt, for food, not sport. I also have a calf butchered annually, ring the necks of chickens, and squish every fire ant I see. And none of it bothers me, to me it is just like cutting up the veggies I grow in the garden.

I apologize to all for taking up board resources last week. I just felt someone needed to stand up to a ranting none of us needed. Tried to my best ability to be level headed and rational. But will not be bullied. It seemed to have worked as a number of people got tired of another board member calling us idiots and also stood up.

Yesterday was a Super Bore until the last 5 or so minutes, then it was interesting. Had more fun drinking the beer and playing strip poker with my wife during half time. Now talk about primordial urges!!!!! !!!!! !

I am now retiring until the Bat Light is lit again.

Ross,

there is a saying by Teddy Roosevelt and it is something like 'the timid souls who know neither victory or defeat they are quick to point out where the strong man stumbles. Why don't you quit pointing out silly mistakes and grow up. I thought you were leaving. Did you watch the Superbowl? it was a great game and it brought a lot of people together and it showed something beyond sport American heroes as a result of 9/11. SOmeday you may be a hero but today you just bother people.

I thought YOU were leaving.
No, I didn`t watch the super bore, but you can bet your fat hiney that I WILL be watching the Daytona 500.
One can only bother people who allow themselves to be bothered. That you allow me to bother you says a whole lot more about you than it does about me.
I know I do arouse ire in some people, but I`ll bet no post about 6 to 12 volt conversions is read by as many people as our jabs at each other have been. I have certainly had a lot of fun, and if you havewn`t, maybe you are taking yourself a little too seriously. Hey, you ain`t that Randall on tv, are you? The one that used to be opposite Oscar on The Odd Couple.

Before I retire back to being a gentleman farmer (suit and tie executive during office hours, down to earth blue jeans and boots working the land the rest of time), let me say, I suspected you were really a sports fan of some sort. Doth did protest too much.

That is only a friendly ribbing. Please do not reply, the Bat Light is off.

Ross,

Are you the same Ross that painted that cool Stars & Stripes N on Tractor Forum? If so, what do you charge for such a paint job?

No, I didn`t do that paint job. I did admire it though. You wouldn`t happen to live around St. Louis, would you?

9Ner, Now more than in years past you need stabilizers in fuel that is stored. The modern fuels have a lot of oxigenators added to them for polution requirements and they do not stand up well in storage. Also they raise havock with many of the old rubber gaskets and diaphrams. You read a lot about that in the old car magazines. Dave <*)))><

It has to be run into the carberator and lines. Stabilizer that is.

N'er, I use StaBil in all my machines and I think its great. As some one below wrote you need to get it in and run the engine until its comes through the carb. I do this every fall with all my stuff and I never have a problem starting anything.I feel its pretty cheap insurance to keep em all healthy.

I think the key to keeping the gas in your N fresh is to use it frequently. Grin That's my plan anyway.
I think it was I who used the term Super Bore.
But in spite of my own diatribes against sports the other day I did watch the game last night.
Albeit for the commercials (which weren't so great this year) but also because it's a good excuse to have a couple of beers with my friends.
It's hard for me to take a totally anti sports stand when I see 5 former presidents involved in the pre game show. I mean, it is a pretty big chunk of American culture after all.
Great game. Better than the huge blow outs of recent years. I wasn't rooting for one team over another but I do kind of like to see the underdog
win.

Hey 9n'er, I am reluctant about saying anything other than tractor related stuff after last week. So let me say that I didn't do anything to the gas in my 8n, but I don't consider it stored for the winter as I use it occasionally (sp). Now about that game, it was probably the best super bowl game I have seen even though the Rams didn't win. The Patriots were dialed into the Rams offense and they just simply outplayed the Rams. My thirst for blood has abated. Ha Ha
We went to a friend's house for a super bowl party and there was lots of food and laughs. We had a lot of fun, even the people that don't like football had a good time. I better shut up now. Have a good day.

The stabil in the tank is okay, but the gas doesn't really get all that stale in a few months. I think the real value is down in the carb where a little varnish can go a long way to plugging a hole. Unless you run the tractor long enough to get the treated gas down into the carb you're just wasting money in my opinion. I do put stabil in all my stored engines every fall and have not had a problem with varnish buildup.
