You may remember, I blew a radiator hose and then couldn't get my 8n to start.

Over the past weekend, I installed new stuff: head gasket, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, condensor, and points. When I put it back together, it fired right up. I don't know the exact problem, but it was in need of a tune-up anyway...

I have low compression, but don't have the time or $$$ to do an overhaul now. Will it do any damage to the tractor to use it this way? All cyls read about 60 psi dry. They go to about 80-90 wet.

Thanks for all the suggestions!!! This forum has been a GREAT help.

Russ

Russ..... ...glad you got your 8N runnin'.

Before you go gettin woundup 'bout overhaulin', since you quote fairly even (cyl to cyl) both dry and wet, I want you to think about your tractors recent history.

Its been my experience that even and low compression on a runnin' engine, while wear related, it can also be attributed to sticky rings and valves from varnish and sludge from not changing oil frequent enough or having sat un-runned for long time. (long time could be several months to several years, same effect)

Heres what I'd do. I'd get some Marvel Mystery Oil and a small scrub brush like old toothbrush. I'd remove the valve covers behind the carb and scrub the intake valve stems as best as I could. Exhausts don't get gummed up but you can scrub 'em if'n ya wants too.

Put 'er back together and then pour the rest of MMO innna oil pan to unstick the rings. Run it for 10 hrs and drain oil and refill with new and filter.

Then I'd retake the compression on a warm engine and you might just luck out and not have to spend $1500 for an overhaul, just the price of can of MMO. And keep changing yer oil at least yearly innna the fall..... ...Dell

This tractor sat for several years before I began working on it last summer. I had been so long, I had to tear apart the carb and "peel" the gas gunk out of it. It was a REAL mess. So... I'm going to give the mystery oil a shot and keep my fingers crossed.

thanks again,

Russ

I don't think that you'll hurt anything running the engine as is, as long as you have enough power to do what you have to do, and that the oil consumption ain't bad. Might change oil filter more often and see if you have metal in the oil from time to time.
