Hi all.

I'm somewhay electrically challanged, so be gentle...

Going in the opposite direction that VB is heading, I finally did the 12v conversion on my 41' 9N. The fates were telling me it was time for a change;

1.) I fried a coil by leaving the ignition on. 2.) My old 6v battery was finally giving up the ghost anyway. 3.) I have multiple 12 volt batteries just lying about, laughing in my face.

Well anyway, I slapped on and hooked up a 10si alternator, a new 6v coil with a Chrysler ballast resistor and a new N-resistor in series, (just to please Dell) checked points, changed the condenser, and installed what looked to be a side marker light. (although I'm not sure if it's a suitable equivalent to a #194) The light was bright when I turned the key and the machine started right up. The anmeter jumped to 15 or so for a second, then settled right down to 1-2 amps, just like I it should. A voltmeter also says that I'm getting charge. My quandry is that the marker light dims, but won't go out, even when the engine s reved up. Wassup wit dat? No other symptoms to report, doctors. The light says that the alternator be dying, or is it?

Another thing; does it matter which resistor is hooked up first in line?

Thanks for the consultation. My co-pay is in the mail.

Pg, Lamps don't care which way current is flowing and the voltage output of the Alt diode pak is most likely higher then your BAT connection. Do you have it connected to the KEY side of the Ballast R ??

GM use a "DIODE" to excite ALT and the diode
blocks reverse current "Completely". I would replace the Lamp with a Radioshack.com diode
1n5400 (part # 900-2878) .12 ea (cheap)

Hope This Helps

As Dell said, you may have the wrong bulb with too low a resistance. You could eliminate the bulb and use a 10 watt 10 Ohm resistor instead. (Available at Radio Shack) OR,,,,,one of the sections of the Diode Trio could be bad... (Cheap part)

PJ..... ....ah yes, my reputation is suspect...Dell (grin)

Resistors don't matter which one is first in line in this case. Just like it don't matter which flashlight battery is first as long as their both good.

About the marker light. 1) if'n the tractor stops when you turn the ignition key off, its working. 2) bright idiot light before starting should go off when running. Just might be the wrong bulb. 3) I know on my BMW's and VW's if'n very dull light visable at night with headlight off and engine runnin', its time to get new brushes. This is something you can't see with bright headlight muckin up your night vision. Since your bulb is out innna the open and not hidden behind a bunch of dashboard red plastic filters, it just might be easier to see out innna the open if'n yer brushes are going bad..... ....Dell
