Paint it?

Here's another "simple" question... Since I had to take the hood off to change my head gasket, I have an opportunity to shoot the engine and hood with some rustoleom or other quick paint. Is that a good idea? I don't want to take the time to restore right now, but I would like to protect the metal so it doesn't get any worse. I have one small area rusted out on the hood, but most of it is in good condition. Will adding a layer of paint do any good if I don't strip it down to bare metal now?

thanks,

Russ

I'm at the same point you are(head gasket and all) and I agree with the others.I can't aford a full restore and the "cheap" paint would be better than nothing. I'll probably give it a quick power wash and hit it with some rust converter that I got from Gempler's.I bought some Rustoleum Industrial Dark Machine Gray(matches the original well enough by me). Rattle cans for the sheet metal and a can of brush on for the rest.It couldn't hurt and the rocks and trees don't care what it looks like when I drive by them.

I agree with Dell. Paint now to preserve and protect. If you are going to do a restoration in the future, you will be stripping all the paint off anyway, and what you paint now will be preserved.

Russ..... ..I'd shoot it. I'd probably treat the rust with somesort of rust blocker/converter first. Take advantage of the oportunity NOW..... ..Dell

I agree with Dell. As an old timer, we know the value of takin' advantage of the opportunity.
